‘Cities of Light. Ákra Leuké, Lvcentvm, Laqant’ has welcomed around 50,000 visitors since its inauguration at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (Marq) last December, according to the institution’s data. The exhibition, which showcases the succession of ancient cities that have shaped modern-day Alicante, is now entering its final month at the museum before closing on the 7th of September.
Through a journey across the three temporary rooms and the Marq Library, the exhibition offers a chronological narrative where the public can learn about the historical occupation of La Albufereta, using the archaeological site of Tossal de Manises as a central theme, particularly between the mid-first millennium BC and the late first millennium AD.
With summer visiting hours from 10:00 to 22:00, Tuesday to Saturday, and from 10:00 to 14:00 on Sundays and holidays, ‘Cities of Light’ is an initiative promoted by the Alicante Provincial Council through Marq and the C.V. Marq Foundation, with the collaboration of ASISA and La Caixa foundations.
Additionally, the exhibition features the participation of thirty Spanish cultural entities, including museums, archives, and foundations, which have lent their materials to facilitate the contextualization and understanding of the theme addressed, according to sources from the Provincial Council.
‘Cities of Light’ houses more than 660 pieces and is curated by Manuel Olcina, director of Marq; Rafael Pérez, director of the Architecture Area of the Provincial Council, and the Excavations technicians of the C.V. Marq Foundation, Antonio Guilabert and Eva Tendero.
